New Malacovia: A Climate-Resilient Riverfront Vision
active 7 months, 2 weeks agoAs climate change intensifies across Southern Europe, urban areas like the Tirana River corridor face mounting threats—from extreme heatwaves to seasonal flooding. We are initiating a strategic urban resilience project focused on the riverfront of New Malacovia, a visionary extension of Tirana envisioned to balance nature, city, and climate adaptation.
This project aims to transform the underutilized Tirana River zone into a multi-functional urban landscape that mitigates urban heat islands, enhances water management, and provides safe, accessible public spaces for vulnerable populations. By combining climate data, GIS mapping, community input, and nature-based solutions (e.g., green infrastructure, shaded corridors, water retention zones), we envision a new model for Mediterranean urban riverfronts that supports both environmental and social resilience.
We are currently seeking interdisciplinary partnerships—with universities, municipalities, design firms, and civil society organizations—to co-develop pilot interventions, share expertise, and pursue EU-level funding. Our goal is to deliver both short-term climate shelters and a long-term adaptation roadmap by 2030, aligned with UCCRN principles and the IPCC’s climate-resilient development pathways.
