BACKGROUND
The Adriatic-Ionian region faces a significant demographic challenge with its rapidly aging population. Countries such as Greece, North Macedonia, Slovenia, Albania, Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Montenegro are experiencing a sharp increase in the proportion of citizens aged 65 and over. According to Eurostat (2023), Italy and Greece already have among the highest shares of elderly populations in Europe, while Slovenia, Serbia, and Montenegro are projected to see similar trends by 2050 (United Nations, 2022). Albania and North Macedonia are also rapidly transitioning into aging societies, with limited infrastructure to support healthy aging (WHO Europe, 2021).
Despite the growing need, healthcare and social systems across these countries are often underprepared to support active, independent, and connected lives for seniors. Digital inclusion among older adults remains low, particularly in rural areas (European Commission DESI Report, 2023), while traditional care models are increasingly unsustainable given economic and workforce pressures.
“SENIOR-INNOVATE” addresses these gaps by fostering transnational collaboration to develop innovative, digital, and green solutions that promote elderly well-being, reduce social isolation, and support active aging. It leverages the strengths of universities, SMEs, NGOs, and public authorities to co-create solutions directly with seniors, ensuring relevance and impact.
OBJECTIVES
Overall Objective:
To enhance the health, well-being, and active participation of elderly people in the Adriatic-Ionian region by establishing transnational innovation clusters that drive digital and social innovations.
Specific Objectives:
– Establish and operationalize transnational Health and Aging Innovation Clusters.
– Develop, pilot, and upscale innovative digital solutions addressing elderly care and active aging.
– Strengthen cross-border cooperation among SMEs, universities, NGOs, and public authorities focused on aging challenges.
– Increase the digital literacy and social inclusion of elderly people in partner countries.
PARTNER PROFILES
– Public Authorities, including ministries, local and regional authorities.
– Universities and Research Centers with expertise in gerontology, public health, and ICT applications in healthcare.
– SMEs offering care services, including digital health platforms and telecare solutions for elderly people.
